Eyelashes.

Eyelashes are my favorite part of the face. In my opinion, no type of makeup looks better than simple and natural face makeup and some gorgeous eyelashes. The right mascara can complete any look you're going for, and at the same time, the wrong mascara could ruin it. So how do you get to-die-for lashes? Let's start with a quick look into some mascaras that I love...

Rimmel Glam'Eyes Mascara
Rimmel makes pretty good makeup. For cheaper stuff, it's my favorite. Their eyeliner and foundation have always worked well for me, and this mascara is my favorite inexpensive mascara. The tip of the wand actually bends if you jam it back into the tube too quickly/crooked, so you'll have to be careful of that. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this if you don't want to spend more than $10 on a tube of mascara.

If you don't mind spending a little extra, I would suggest taking a trip to Sephora and checking some of these mascaras out (remember, they have samples of all their makeup in store, so you can see how they work for you before you buy them!).

I got this in a package with their Lip Injection lip plumper (love that stuff!) and Wrinkle Injection stuff. The wrinkle injection I only used once (and it totally dried my skin out...), but their mascara and eyeshadows are good. I like this because it really thickens my eyelashes. The point of this mascara is it builds tubes around your eyelashes (I think Loreal or another company came out with something like that too, but that is an imposter... this is the original - i.e., the one to get.) If you are looking for a lot of volume, I would get this. The only problem is, with the type of brush they include, I tend to get a lot of clumps - but I also happen to apply about 10 coats of mascara too many, so maybe it's also partial user error.

This is, by far, my favorite mascara I have ever used. I figured the Sephora brand would be kinda mediocore, but I find myself using this more than any other mascara. This is the shit. If, God forbid, I had to limit myself to just one type of mascara, this would be the one for me. It thickens, lengthens, and the brush makes it impossible (for the most part) to get huge mascara clumps, no matter how many coats I apply. Score!

Tarte has done it. They have created a mascara that I can actually apply when I already have clumps in my eyelashes. This somehow helps separate my eyelashes, so when I have a huge clump problem, I simply apply some of this, and voila! Clumps are gone. Another thing Tarte's mascara is good for is when I've applied false eyelashes (we'll get there in just a second...) and want just a little bit of length, with minimal volume. The lack of volume is ideal if you plan on wearing the falsies for more than one day. I would definitely pick Tarte over any other brand if I'm wearing falsies.

I know, false eyelashes are cheating, right? Well, what about when you want your eyes to POP but you don't want to wear visible, heavy eye makeup? This is the key, ladies. Ardell is the only brand of falsies I've tried, and to be Frank ("Can I still be Garth?"), it's probably the only brand I will try. They're just that good. I prefer the individual sections, like with what's pictured, but you can also get lash strips. These are so inexpensive (less then $4 for 2-4 applicatons worth at Fred Meyer, plus the cost of the adhesive) and easy to apply. The only problem is waiting for them to dry, so no fast blinking. I get impatient and sometimes a lash cluster will fall, glue end, into my eye, which stings like hell. But no blindness for me yet, which is always a good sign! I can wear these falsies and no other eye makeup and still feel good about myself. But pair it with a little bit of mascara and eyeliner, and I feel like a million bucks. Doesn't every girl deserves that sometimes?

  1. I feel very motivated to venture beyond my usual Cover Girl mascara now... Thanks for all the info!
